The Arrival of the Blackberry

While temperatures are dropping, and the nights are drawing in, a culinary seasonal shift is gradually occurring in the kitchens of Yorkshire. The autumn harvest has arrived.

When I think of autumn I think of the arrival of the blackberry, or bramble as we call the bushes in our garden. What is often seen as a creeping thorny invader for the majority of the year, its spiky reputation is forgiven by the annual arrival of its sweet-tart bulging berries.

Wimbledon Celebration Cake

Well well well what a busy few weeks it has been indeed!

Having recently returned from a fantastic holiday on the Isle of Arran (fantastic local produce, including copious amounts of whisky and seafood), graduating from university AND my second radio feature, it’s time for me to get back into the swing of writing more lovely new recipes for you all to try. Although there’s a lot to catch up on, I’d like to share my *brand new recipe* for my Wimbledon Strawberries and Cream Celebration Cake as featured on the Bake of the Day section of Sunday Gardening with Julia Lewis on BBC Radio York.

“Yes, it’s fruit. It’s definitely fruit!”

As the Women’s Institute celebrate their centenary, the 100th Annual General Meeting was today opened by Her Majesty the Queen.

Although the WI do very much more than baking nowadays, I just had to share this pearl of a moment from the press today. Any appearance of the Queen is a delight, but this clip is a joy to watch. Fruit cake is a struggle for anyone to slice- we are only human after all!

A chat with Tarte and Berry

Tarte and Berry are a brand new bakery business based in York, set up by sister-duo Jane and Lucy Batham. They are already famous for their signature luxury salted caramel brownies, having made appearances at York Chocolate Festival, and more recently The Good Food Show Spring 2015. Holding accolades such as a Good Food Show Producers Bursary Award, and being named as a Small Business Sunday winner by Theo Paphitis, I wanted to find out more about their transformation into some of York’s best artisan producers.
